Matamata

Chelus fimbriata

The matamata (or mata mata) is a large turtle found through the Amazon River Basin in South America. These turtles can reach up to 1.5 feet long! They are impressively camouflaged to look like a dead leaf sitting on the bottom of a stream or pond, where they lay in wait for their prey. Matamata are carnivores and use a unique suction feeding technique where they open their mouths very wide, very quickly which creates a vacuum to draw in nearby fish and swallow them whole!
